OSD is a standards effort defining how storage devices, like disks, disk arrays or tape libraries could present a standard, SCSI-based, interface to serve objects to the user-facing file system component. This moves the processing required for figuring out which sectors contain a file’s data from the server to the storage device.

Manchmal ist es ganz nett, auch über den Datenbank- und OS-Himmel hinaus auf die Hardware-Welt zu schauen, was da passiert. Bei der Definition des Standards sollte man einfach nicht vergessen, einen Layer für QoS (Quality of Service) einzubauen, damit die Datenbanken ihre Storage auch dann bekommen, wenn gleichzeitig tausende Mitarbeiter ihre Scherzvideos anschauen…
